Planning, Zoning & Inspections

The City of Lexington is responsible for several community development functions, including building inspections, code enforcement, planning, and zoning.

Our Building Inspector is responsible for the application and enforcement of the building code and related ordinances regulating construction, alterations, and the use of buildings within the city.  He is also responsible for responding to citizens' concerns relating to property maintenance, nuisances, signage, and zoning issues.

Our City Administrator assists the Planning & Zoning Commission in long-range planning for future growth in the city.  The Commission also reviews zoning and site design of current development projects.

Comprehensive Plan
What is a comprehensive plan?  A comprehensive plan is required by state law to be used as a guide that provides direction and vision as to how a city will develop and grow.  The plan also creates a framework for future decisions, and is used by the City Council, Planning & Zoning Commission, Park Board, City Staff, and the public in planning processes.

Adopted by the City Council on Preliminary Approval December 18th, 2008.
